Treasures of Darkness

December 14

By Stan Key

I will give you the treasures of darkness… (Isaiah 45:3).

One year ago, it was today
(Or was it ten? It’s hard to say);
A surgeon’s knife, a tragic stroke,
It seemed our lives went up in smoke.
We thought perhaps that death had won;
But the real war had but begun.
How should we then commemorate
The day that ushered in this fate?

It’s not easy to recall
What life was like before the Fall;
When Katy walked and drove and cooked,
And hugged our grand-kids, read a book.
She had her life, I had mine,
Our ministries were doing fine.
Though we were one we lived as two;
We each had separate work to do.

But now life’s different, things have changed,
Our whole world’s been rearranged!
A wheel chair now defines our life;
I’m an appendage of my wife!
I wash her hair and count her pills,
I tie her shoes, pay doctor bills.
I dare not leave her lest she fall,
It seems I’m constantly on call.

At times I want to kick and scream
And wake up from an awful dream.
At other times I bite my lip
And tell myself; “Stan, get a grip.”
If stoic-like I do my work,
I manage not to go berserk!
And duty-bound I do my chore,
And keep self-pity at the door.

Lord, isn’t there another way
To help commemorate this day?

“I thought you’d never ask,” God said,
“Why not praise the Lord instead?
Yes, things have changed and life’s not fair
But I’m still sovereign everywhere.
And in the place where pain abounds
That is precisely where I’m found!
So stop your grumbling and receive
The grace that comes when you believe!”

And so I humbly bowed to pray:
“Give grace, O Lord, help me obey.”

Though my condition hasn’t changed
My inner world’s been rearranged!
I’m learning to receive his grace
And in my pain to see his face.
Yes there are treasures in the night
That bless and fill us with delight.
But we must find them, that’s our task,
He’ll help us if we only ask.

  1. I can only imagine this journey you both, all, have walked in this last year. Both your poem and Anna’s blog succinctly tell the story of pain, disillusionment, confusion, fear…trust, hope, healing, praise. You now live a new normal…but God isn’t finished yet. We continue to seek His face and stand in the gap when you are weary. We are blessed to do so because you are much loved…by Abba, and many literally around the world. My prayer is that the light of Jesus will shine brightly in, on and through your lives this Christmas season…and into 2017.

  2. Dear Stan,
    What profound words. I have learned that our life can change so quickly and we don’t always understand why. It challenges my faith and the questions that come may never be answered. My hope is that I chose to praise Jesus and not become hardened. Your love and dedication to your sweet wife, Katy is such a beautiful picture of His love for us. May we all be tender to our loved ones and humbly serve their needs. May God give you strength for today.

    1. Anne Marie,
      You have had plenty of opportunity to become hardened because of trials and pain, and you have not, so you are an inspiration to me, that in spite of the unanswered questions, we keep turning toward The Only One who can answer them! Jesus. I think of what Helen Roseveare said, it’s not asking of life ,”is it worth it”, but is He worthy?in answering that,we look toward Him and lean on Him for the grace it takes to keep on keeping on, believing in The Only One who can save. Thanks for walking this journey with us keeping our yes on Him. Much love,katy

  8. Dear Pastor Stan, how I miss your beautiful words.
    You remind me in this poem how silly the things are that I let bother me on any given day in a life that is relatively free from suffering!
    God bless you and Katy as you continue to bless all of us with whom you share your life and love.

  9. This was the Devotional today from Love Worth Finding:

    BIBLE MEDITATION:
    “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

    DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
    The One who created the valley is there with you! He has prepared the way through the valley. It is not a place of permanence, but a place of passage. He knows every twist and turn, every changing shadow, every den where danger lurks—that One is with you!

    Focus on the light and not the darkness. God has made you to walk through shadows. When the shadow approaches, you must walk through. The One greater than death is in you! He is your Jehovah-Shammah—the Lord ever-present. His grace is greater. His peace is purer. His devotion is dearer. Where Satan casts a shadow, our Sovereign Lord reigns supreme.

  15. And as I read this and reflect often on, and in your published book, “Face to Face”, I wish for a regular weekly, monthly, post of this type. Your thoughts. Dare I pray for God’s encouragement in your posting thoughts, observations, feelings regularly, knowing that this alone would be more “work”?

    God so often speaks to me, to us(?) through these your words, neh His words.

    As I consider my struggles in life, I often reflect on Paul the Apostle, where ship wreck and trial repeatedly occurr though His pursuit of God was quite extraordinary. Dare I pursue Him more, as Paul.?. Don’t know if I could take it.?. In and through Him all things are possible, I believe…

    Pastor Stan, I thank you for this post! And I hope and pray that you truly understand that God is speaking to me in and through your words.!!. Please post again/more as often as you are able!

  16. You both are living the real kife and i praise God for your heuristic humility posture. While we are not skilled to understand yes there is one who is incharge and understands. Life is sometimes all we need. And the guy without legs can shout out “legs or no legs” i will praise the lord. Only faith can so speak. Praising Him with you

  18. Thank you Stan for your willingness to be transparent. When you do so, I can look through you and see Jesus. He is there, around you and Katie, under you, within you…completely surrounded. When I read this it reminds me to look back and see that He was there in those hard times, always faithful. It is just so hard to see when the pain is immediate and deep. Miss your voice in our heads… but this is a sweet reminder.

  22. Hi Katy,
    Your verse, Isaiah 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. triggered my memories to 3 years ago. A former precious member of our church had cancer and was very sick and in the hospital in Connecticut. Three of us flew out to see her and her family for 2 days. When we got to the hospital, she shared this verse. We weren’t sure where she was going with it. Then through her incredible smile, she said, “I have been asking the Lord to reveal to me the secret treasures and riches He has for me in this present darkness.” She said more, but that is what stuck. Few people even try to see the precious gems God has for us in times of pressure or trial, but she not only tried, but did. You are also one of those genuine examples of victory in the trials, an overcomer. Thank you for sharing and persevering in hope and joy even when it is hard. We love you and are praying for you.
    Blessings in Jesus,
    Randy Vinson
