A Bump In the Road

Written by: Stan & Katy

Have you ever felt like when it rains, it pours? That trials seem to sometimes come all at once? Though we know that the rain falls on the just and the unjust, at times it can feel like there is a target on your back. We know from Scripture that Job and Jeremiah felt this way. Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him (Job 13:15). He has made me desolate, he has bent his bow and set me as a target for his arrow (Lam 3:11-12). This year we have felt like we have been caught in a downpour. Stan’s heart attack, losing Stan’s Mom, Katy’s stroke and surgeries and now…prostate cancer.

Tomorrow morning (Tuesday, September 6), Stan begins five days of radiation treatment (cyber knife) for prostate cancer.  Because of a rising PSA and his family history, the diagnosis wasn’t really a surprise and the prognosis is good, but still… did we really need this? Did we really need to add cancer to the list?

To be honest, we are facing this new development with minimal anxiety or dread. After all we’ve been through, this feels more like an annoying bump in the road. Though some have commented on what they perceive to be our “godly” response, for us, it feels more like numbness, or perhaps even cynical stoicism.

When messengers came to Job one after another telling him of the loss of his servants, the capture of his livestock, and the death of his children, Job’s response to the unrelenting kaboom, kaboom, kaboom of calamity was truly heroic.

Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshipped. And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’ In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” (Job. 1:20-22).

To state the obvious: we are not Job and our sufferings are minor compared to his. He was a giant of the faith. We are not. And though we may be a bit numb, we do pray that our response will continue to be like Job’s. We pray that the Lord will give us strength to continue holding on in this downpour. In a hurricane, the point is to find something solid and just hold on for dear life! Persevering stick-to-it-iveness is the point. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23).

Joy will come in the morning.

We can declare that even in the storm, All is Well.

Thank you for being our family of faith. In light of all we’ve been through together we wanted you to know what Stan faces this week and humbly ask for your prayers yet again!

We can’t even begin to enumerate the countless ways your love and prayers have made the difference during this journey we are on. A French worship song states it succinctly: La vie est dure mais Dieu est bon (Life is hard but God is good). That about sums it up!

*This song and message have really ministered to our family at this time of suffering. Hope it also is a blessing to you!

  4. Katy & Stan, So sorry too hear this news. Know I pray for all of you everyday but will put in a special note this week for you Stan. I can relate too bumps in the road as I have been traveling down a highway like a freshly plowed field and after a while it gels like a smooth super highway. I just ran across a quote I just found last night from C.S. Lewis which says “God whispers to us in our blessings and speaks to us in our conscience……..but he shouts to us in our pain.” Speaking for myself living in a constant battlefield I have been so blessed that in the darkest hours of fear and heartbreak my heavenly Father let’s me know just how much he really loves me by showing me the most simple things of grace. His love for us no matter how much we medd it up. And everyday helping us too be like his Son. And that my friends in a mighty tall order… but thanks be too God’s grace that his Son died in our place too save us. Those who were called and chosen from the end too the beginning and nothing the enemy can throw at us will seprste is from our Father …. Katy and Stan no matter how rough it gets or seems too get God is always faithful too provide all me need and it always send too come right at the last second … Help will be there in so many ways for its God who fights your battles even when you feel all alone … Stan if theres anything I could too help please call I’m always close by. Your friend always, Robert

Our sons motherinlaw- our age- had a large stroke in March. She is plateauing of now in recovery and very discouraged. We would like to share the post Katy had earlier this week with her if that is ok with you. It may encourage her. WE are also trying to witness to her.

  11. Cancer is no “bump in the road” to most of us, it is a Great Northeast pot-hole. If numbness is the most you’re feeling, you are indeed on the road to sainthood….BOTH OF YOU! We ALL love you and can’t imagine anymore “rain falling on you just ones”, but “HE, who began a good work in you, will bring it to completion” and Him we can trust. ” We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” (2 Corinthians 4) This is hard rock truth you can stand on. We are standing on this promise for you in prayer, especially this week.

  13. Stan & Katy,

We love you and are praying for you as you face yet another “bump in the road”. Though you explain your response as stoicism or numbness, Jesus still shines through both of you as the reason you’re persevering. We pray that He will seem very near and comforting during this trial.

I listened to/watched the YouTube video “Though He Slay Me”. What a great song/message!

  14. We will absolutely be praying for you both! This is a response to Katy’s post as well, since the two posts came close together in my email. On Saturday, I stepped out of my husband’s truck and fell down an embankment, landing flat on my face. I mean, I didn’t even have time to put out a hand to break the fall! If not for the grace of God, I would have flipped over completely, possibly breaking my neck. So now I walk around with a huge black eye, swollen lip, scratches on my skin, a headache and mild concussion. I told Joe, “It’s funny how your life can change in one instant”. And it is true, isn’t it? Just when things feel cozy and all set, everything can change…just like that! We are completely dependent creatures…dependent upon a loving Creator for the very breath we take in. Life is like my fall…it feels out of control, from the awareness of the state of our nation to the growing awareness that things are not right in the world. But God. He is still and always and the only Sovereign. It is comforting to know that He holds it all in His hand, and is working out His plans…for our good. Stan and Katy, in a very small way I understand what you are feeling. The song you shared was timely, and the words of John Piper in that song are timeless. Stoic or no, you are both an example of faithfulness, and of the grace of God at work. Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us. Because of you, we are still learning, benefiting from your lives and example. Much love from Joe and I.

  16. Being all man and all God, I am amazed that Jesus didn’t tell his Father that he was going to “quit” the job he came to earth to do. In the same manner, you all must try to keep the faith for all of us following your journey. It certainly doesn’t seem fair, however, our earthly experience will be dwarfed by our future heavenly life! I understand how easy it is for me to say that and how hard it is for you to live it.

    1. Stan & Katy – Thank you for being faithful in all things.
      “The Lord trieth the righteous.”
      Psalm 11:5

All events are under the control of Providence; consequently all the trials of our outward life are traceable at once to the great First Cause. Out of the golden gate of God’s ordinance the armies of trial march forth in array, clad in their iron armour, and armed with weapons of war. All providences are doors to trial. Even our mercies, like roses, have their thorns. Men may be drowned in seas of prosperity as well as in rivers of affliction. Our mountains are not too high, and our valleys are not too low for temptations: trials lurk on all roads. Everywhere, above and beneath, we are beset and surrounded with dangers. Yet no shower falls unpermitted from the threatening cloud; every drop has its order ere it hastens to the earth. The trials which come from God are sent to prove and strengthen our graces, and so at once to illustrate the power of divine grace, to test the genuineness of our virtues, and to add to their energy. Our Lord in his infinite wisdom and superabundant love, sets so high a value upon his people’s faith that he will not screen them from those trials by which faith is strengthened. You would never have possessed the precious faith which now supports you if the trial of your faith had not been like unto fire. You are a tree that never would have rooted so well if the wind had not rocked you to and fro, and made you take firm hold upon the precious truths of the covenant grace. Worldly ease is a great foe to faith; it loosens the joints of holy valour, and snaps the sinews of sacred courage. The balloon never rises until the cords are cut; affliction doth this sharp service for believing souls. While the wheat sleeps comfortably in the husk it is useless to man, it must be threshed out of its resting place before its value can be known. Thus it is well that Jehovah trieth the righteous, for it causeth them to grow rich towards God.
      Spurgeon

We love you so much and are praying for renewed strength to face each day.

  27. Dear Pastor Stan and Katy, I pray that the added pain with fighting the cancer can be minimal with good results. Your words “hold on for dear life” and persevering a stick-to-it-iveness makes me wonder how our Heavenly Father looks at America in comparison to Israel in the O. T. But what God is allowing in your family, health-wise, brings to mind Jesus’ suffering. I pray that you both see and feel comfort and freedom from pain with healing. Thank you for keeping in touch with us, letting us be involved with prayer. Love, Carole
