The Psalmist and book of Job both mention the fact that God gives ‘songs in the night’. (Psalm 42:8; Psalm 77:6; Job 35:10) Several times in the last few weeks Mom has shared with me songs or verses that the Lord has given her in the night. Even now that we are home nights are often when fatigue, anxiety and discouragement settle in. But God promises us ‘songs in the night.’
Weeks ago I created a playlist for Mom to listen to as she goes to sleep and often throughout the night as we rarely sleep straight through. While she is the first to admit she does not always feel like singing, she also admits her feelings and her welfare do not change certain realities or alter certain truths! We have been amazed through this whole experience how many times God has given us a song (usually in the darkness of night) to remind us of His unchanging character even when no two days are the same.
Mom asked me to share some of these songs with you. May they speak truth to each one of us and remind us that we serve a God who gives us songs in the night but also commands the sun to rise each morning and with each sunrise He brings new mercies! Great is His faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:22-23)

How timely this is! I was just thinking ONE HOUR AGO how tempting it is to succumb to doubt and worry in the middle of the night. I remarked to someone a couple of months ago that I have a good bit of faith– until 3 a.m. Thank you and thank your mom. I’ll share with Elizabeth.

Thanks for these..music is always one of my greatest comforts…and yet, I can only imagine how difficult this is for all of you to make the needed transitions to all the changes in your life…I am so sorry in all human terms but grateful that you can receive songs even in the night..love ruth

Thank you for sharing these songs. What a blessing they are! I am also often awake in the middle of the night. The darkness is a place where our fears, pain, discouragement can often make an un-welcome appearance. However, God is there too! These songs and your words are an important reminder of His presence with us and His care for us. I will continue to pray for you, especially when I am awake in the middle of the night. Joy does come in the morning. Blessings and prayers to all of you!

Our God and the universe He created are so complex and beautiful. I get great joy and comfort from music, as I marvel at the fact that God included music in His world — and put it into our hearts as a special blessing. As a fairly new Christian I discovered Genesis 4:21 and realized that from the very beginning (Genesis 4!!!!), music existed. God gave it to us His children from the first creation. After prayer and Christian fellowship, music is my greatest blessing.
I love you, and continue to pray.

I LOVE this list of songs for in the night. Here is a gospel song, my Dad sang in much the same circumstances. “You can have a song in your heart in the night, after every trial, after every mile. Anyone can sing when the sun shining bright, but it takes a song in your heart at night”.Then, my kids (young at the time) would later in his life sang, “Jesus will give you a song. Everybody sing…Songs in the morning, songs in the night, songs of devotion and songs of delight. Melody ringing, in my heart singing, Jesus gives me a song. Jesus gives me a song.” Then, we would all sing, “There’s within my heart a melody, Jesus whispers sweet and low. Fear NOT, I am with thee, peace be still, in all life’s ebb and flow. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know. Fills my every longing and keeps me singing as I go.” Katy, please know that we ALSO wake up with songs in the night for you and want you to remember how much we love you and your family and how often we plead with God on your behalf, to give you all you need to keep that song in your heart, After all, like Peter and my husband says, “Where else can we turn? Jesus, you alone, have the words of eternal life”

Katy, Stan and Anna,
Finally I am writing to tell you that we have been praying regularly for you as we have followed your progress from the very beginning through your blogs. Thank you for sharing from your hearts. We are so sorry the simple surgery brought such a long-lasting complication and do not understand the âwhyâsâ of all that. But we trust with you that God is working it together for good for you and all involved. We rejoice in the steps of progress and it is so great you were able to worship together on Easter!
I want to share a couple âsong storiesâ of my own to yours.
When I walk our dog Suzie in the mornings at Tenwek, since January 2015, I often sing the song, Sovreign, by Chris Tomlin. I use the time to pray for those going through difficult times which seem so dark. So when I was diagnosed with breast cancer last June, that song became even more dear. And God really did carry me through that time. I am thankful to be well. Now, as I sing it in the mornings, I pray for you, and pray for one family at Tenwek who has gone through so much. The lines, âin your everlasting arms, all the pieces of my life, from beginning to the end, I can trust you⦠in your never-failing love You work everything for good; God, whatever comes my way, I will trust Youâ¦.â The rest of the song is really good, too.
My kids helped me put together a playlist of about 20 songs I chose on a day of celebration with the Lord I had after my first surgery, finding no lymph node involvement, etc. I have thought many times of sending the list to you. Anyway, one I put on the list that is so good is Desert Song, by Hillsong United. When I woke up from my first surgery, finding out it had gone longer than I thought so I immediately thought the cancer must have spread, the chorus went over and over in my sleepy anesthesia-affected mind. Hereâs the whole song, but it was the bridge which I have highlighted, that kept going through my head.

We love you and miss you! We are at the Greek CMDA conference, preceded by a four-day bus trip, âIn the Footsteps of the Apostlesâ. Fantastic time, especially because our son, Joel was with us. We were all challenged and inspired by seeing the sites at Philippi, Berea, Thessaloniki and Athens.
Know that each time we gather as a group of any of the Tenwek or WGM Kenya folks, and prayer is a prat of the program, you are being prayed for, besides in our individual families. God is great and He is good.

Thank you for sharing! I take care of a person who struggles with the same issues at night. She was very anxious in the middle of last night. I just passed this e-mail with songs on to her.
