Humor

Today we saw Mom’s sense of humor return! What a joy that was. Here’s an example to make you smile with us:
Because mom can’t swallow she is only allowed ice chips to eat/drink.  This makes her very frustrated because she is very hungry and thirsty.  But the nurses are insistent: “nothing but ice chips!”  This afternoon mom told Dad IN PERFECT FRENCH to get her a coke…. She used french so the nurse would not understand!  Yes, underneath all the wires, tubes, monitors, pain, wounds, and bandages, Katy is fully present!
Mom’s cognition and verbalization is also a lot better. She talked a lot to us today and revealed her sweet spirit, grateful heart, and concern for everyone but herself! So many stories, I don’t know where to begin. Here’s one example:
We love our nurse Treena. Today she cleaned, lotioned ,and massaged Mom’s feet. I asked Mom, “What are we going to do when Treena has to go home and sleep?” Mom said, “I will just dream about her…she will appear like an angel!”
Since many of you can’t be here for this long, hard, and yet sweet journey, we thought you might enjoy a glimpse into our new life in the hospital through some pictures.
Jeannine Brabon is a stroke survivor and she has come in almost every day to cheer Mom on! What a blessing to have her around to give us hope.

Our nurse let Macie sneak in the back door. Mom was THRILLED and used sign language to say "More Macie!" Precious moment.

Our hospital angel who brings joy everywhere she goes!

She still is almost 100% paralyzed in the left side. There has been a glimpse of some feeling and a few intentional twitches, but that’s about it. Keep praying.

Love to you all!

    1. Thank you so much for the daily updates. Our prayers of a complete healing continue! My prayer today, in addition to your requests is that the Spirit in Katy keeps her from any discouragement. I am thinking that in some way, Katy will store up this experience in the valley to glorify Him who loves her and Him who uses her to speak life and truth into so many woman……around the world!!! Could I be so bold as to say that there are but few who He could trust this deep valley to? To be his faithful servant to share His glory, mercy and grace with?
Acts 20:24 this is our dear, sweet Katy.
We hold all of you up in prayer, knowing that you all have difficult individual decisions to make, as well as family ones.
      May God be with you.
      With sincere love & affection,
      John & Kristina Burkart

  1. Praying for you Katy. Have been thinking and remembering with much fondness the days when we were kids at LCC and going over to each others homes.

  5. I rejoice to watch via this blog as the Lord restores Katy, day by day. I know you are thanking Him as you watch her heal by His hand. I am thanking Him, too! He healed me of irreparable damage to my brain from the incurable disease MS, fourteen years ago, even though I had come to the place of having dysphasia (inability to swallow without choking). Dr. Kinlaw has written of how Jesus healed his son of hepatitis. I thank God that you know, trust, and believe Him! Jeff and I continue to pray.

  6. Much love and many prayers from Jim and me…These posts made me laugh and cry. Praying for all of you my Grandfather Luce’s favorite verse, Deuteromony 33:27 – The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms. I’m praying that you all feel those strong and healing arms holding you tight! We love you all!

  7. Praying for you, Katie, and your precious family. The picture of the family together and smiling gave me comfort. This verse I always return to in times of need. Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness: for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercede for us with sighs too deep for words.” What love! What power! What wisdom! What more do we need? Love to you all!
